I was against that. Together they were an all-star group. Cause Id called Jon to try to put it back together. I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. Until you walk out there and open your mouth, and you see what you got, and then it tells you if its gonna be a fun evening or not. The next show is sold out. I arrived in L.A. and his wife picked me up at the airport and took me to his house, where I lived for nine months. And only now, when people come up to me, and tell me what it meant to them, do I realize what the band accomplished. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? If he has to replace a head for me in the middle ofa set, he'll tune it so it's comparable to me. It was really great. I mean, wed get together with Neal, and wed all write the arrangements. And Id sleep, and Id wake up, go do the gig, and the same thing would happen all over again. I was the new kid. And I went on a hike, one I had done many times before this incredible trail, its pretty intense. AD: When he's soloing, I tend to try and watch him because it's not only hearing it's also eye contact. I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. Aynsley Dunbar had played with everybody. And I just couldnt do it anymore. At some point, in all our lives, wed all contributed to that star on the ground. So I have a lawsuit against them. If there was a certain part that he wanted me to play, he'd tell me. Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. Lets roll. It's something I was thinking about, but it is to the point where it sounds like everybody's done it all with what's there. I like doing that sort of thing because I've got the technique to play it. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. After that, I'm on a different continent and David and John take an absolute eon to do the vocals and all the guitar tracks and they use all kinds of different studios. NoI didnt think Journey was done. So the first gig I did with him, I was just learning the songs. This is what I wanna do. We hadnt finished the second leg of the tour. I don't like to have every- thing I do so organized that I spend all of my time reading every little note. So I decided to try drums. So I went to do my first solo record with him. Because I thought that we were big already, that we didnt need a video game. I still never wanted Journey to go away, because it was something that I was there from the beginning and started. I cant tell you when, but Im gonna get it done. It was suggested that I could tour and sit on a stool. They like to criticize you note for note as though they have higher ideas about what should be happening up there. AD: I did eight albums with Frank, starting with Chunga's Revenge. But alot of times it's the head. If you were to play maybe 8th notes at that point, people could hear it and under- stand it. This is a drag, after all this hard work. And Herbie [Herbert] had received a tape from somebody at the label, of Steve Perry. I was taken to London by the Mojos. Even if you get a loose tension rod, it will still keep the tone of the drum because it's so well cast that the rods on either side of the loose one will keep the head seated perfectly. I started out with tin cans actually, to see if I could develop anything, but l got bored trying to get a sound out of it so finally got a drum and started practicing on that. And they are like paintings, cause they were painted in a different time and they sound like it, and that gives em their quality. May 21, 2009. When I was with Zappa, I wanted to learn to play vibes, and I wanted to be able to read faster, so I took some les- sons from Mitchell Peters, who is with the L.A. Philharmonic. I think back in the day, there was a decision, by a couple of key editors, to never give us our just desserts. Jeff Simmons was our bass player, but when he read the script of the movie, he told Frank he wouldn't do it and left. He offered me the gig with him at 20 pounds a week, which at that point, was like 60 bucks. You made a couple of solo records after that. It felt so awesome, to see that song be used in that moment. In the studio, the only appreciation you get is from the guy you're doing the session for, or the producer. I was playing in the band, and Ruth played drums with the orchestra. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. I mean, he's one of the most underrated yet not underrated because anybody that has heard his playing is respectful, especially drummers. Like, Okay, we won the World Series. You spend more time counting out the bars than you do listening to the music and understanding it. I did manage to learn a lot about music by looking at it and trying to discern what was going on. And Journey was on tour, so I said Fine, Ill do that. And so I went down and sat with this mastering engineer. See, its funny. The music is dear to me. There are different ways you can work it. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. I don't want to do it like some of the clinics I've seen where the guy will come out and say, . RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? Its no different. And the pressure of walking in front of an audience every night, and wanting to be what you know they want you to be, and what you want to be for them, and to have this silly little thing in your throat thats about as neurotic as you are, is difficult. I was using alcohol for many, many years, to numb myself. Cause I thought it was silly. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. If you go back to that, what are you going back to now? So thats why I said, Maybe we really are done. Id left to find my life, once before, gone back to it, to try to reclaim something we once had, and then we kinda fell into that same place again. And not until it really took off, I think, did that question really get answered. I'm using those new Quick- Beat hi-hats, with no bell on the bottom and holes drilled in it. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. The lost interview. You broke out of prison, and immediately started thinking about how to get back in. It's kind of a long solo about 27 or 28 seconds. You think they would have been happier if theyd made it in that prog-rock incarnation? He'd just call out a song and tell me whether it was a shuffle or whatever, and give me a nod if there was a break. And so we kept waiting around to see if he was gonna go take care of it. We really couldn't hear them a lot of the time. Cause we didnt sound alike. I didnt need anything else, as far as an opinion on the show. When somebody says, Weve checked out a few singers, its like your wifes saying, Look, while you were goneI know a few guys, and I just wanna know what youve decided to do, because I need to know. So in retrospect [laughs] maybe it wasnt the smartest thing I ever did, because he went, Well, Neals doin one, why cant I do one? And everybodys goin, Well, Neals not doin anything thats gonna conflict with Journey, yknow? Most of the drum parts on that were written down. That was the last time. Sopranos is a definite yes. And he was a great vocalist for what they were looking for, but they didnt want to have a singer out front. "I led his band in the end, that's what happened. On our third gig, we played two 2-hour sets, one after the other. RM: You did a lot of different styles of music during those three years. Which was my original motivation, back in the early 70s. I only sing in the shower! I did four months with Jeff, but he only liked to work about one day a month, which was not enough for me. It was really intense. I just sort of rid of a lot of demons that were inside of me. With most rims, if they get dented a little bit, the head will never seat right and you'll never be able to tune the drum. Singers live on the edge of being powerful, being strong, and not degrading their voice, and its the most difficult edge to walk. Yeah. Im not whining. So Im really excited about getting out there and just being completely in control of whats going on, for real. Aynsley Thomas Dunbar was born in Liverpool, England. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it.
